Escape the Etiquette

You probably know what an Escape Room is by now. Either through experience or hearing about them. You and some friends are tossed in a room (or rooms), you work together to solve puzzles and/or riddles, and manage to win in the nick of time. If you get stuck, most Escape Rooms these days will have a handy way to ask for clues to nudge you in the right direction. But did you know that there’s some unwritten rules on how to maximize your time and enjoyment in these games?

Let’s go over a couple of them

Starting with what we think is the most important one; Communication. Firstly, Communicating with your team is the most essential part of successfully completing any Escape Room. Doesn’t matter how small you might think that detail is. Mentioning it to your team might just be the magic ticket to solving the unsolvable. Don’t forget to listen to your teammates too. We all need a helping hand every now and then.

Secondly, some advice on how to Organize your Clues. Finding clues is the bread and butter of any Escape Game, you can’t win without them, but throwing them around willy-nilly will only lead to confusion and potentially losing track of an important piece. We’d recommend you find some sort of centralized space or surface for the team to store any clues they might find. If everybody knows which table is the Clue Table, it will be much easier to sort through to victory!

Expectations

Finally, we’ve got some advice on setting Expectations for the team. From the get-go we’ll see both teams that prefer to keep it competitive. And teams that are just here for the show. Talking to your team about what you’re looking to do is an important part of making sure everybody has a good time. And more importantly it will help mitigate the inevitable tension when things aren’t going right. Work together to have a good time. Or to make good time, and everybody will get out with their jimmies un-rustled.

Besides the ones we’ve listed above, there are a multitude of options available to the avid escape room fan. Touching on a few, don’t forget to Keep it Simple, Work Together, and Check your Math.
